Trail Descriptions & Locations

The Mount Macpherson trail head is approximately seven kilometres south of Revelstoke on Highway 23. There is a large trail map situated beside the trail fee collection hut. A trail fee box at the trailhead is for times when the booth is not manned.  Outhouses are at the parking lot and by the Ole Sandberg Cabin.

Trail Descriptions

l Easiest (Green)
n More Difficult (Blue)
u Most Difficult (Black)

n Main Loop - 5.0 km

This is the most used trail and is usually groomed first. It starts at the parking area and climbs steadily with a couple of downhill breaks to the Ole Sandberg cabin at 2.5 km. After climbing a short hill past the cabin the trail is flat or downhill back to the parking area. The loop is best skied counter clockwise. Dogs are permitted on the first kilometre to access the Mountain Climb Trail. This is the only groomed section where dogs are permitted.

u Mountain Climb - 2 km

This is an out and back trail that branches off the main loop at about one kilometre up Main Loop and is mainly used by back country skiers accessing the "Fingers". This trail is not groomed. Dogs are permitted on this trail.

WARNING! This trail accesses avalanche terrain. Knowledge of backcountry travel techniques is necessary. Skiers using this area should be equipped with avalanche transceivers, shovels and probes. The club is not responsible for this area and skiers are advised that they ski at their own risk. Contact the Canadian Avalanche Association for information on avalanche conditions.

l Jack Rabbit Loop - 0.25 km

This is a small relatively flat loop used for Ski League instruction.

l Connector - 0.28 km

This trail is an easier alternative to climbing or descending on the main loop.

n Log Roller / Loggers Lane - 1.5 km

After a good climb past the cabin this trail is easy and fun all the way down to the hydroelectric power line. Before descending Hydro Hill, look at the view east up the Illecillewaet Valley .

n Creek Crawl - 0.74 km

This trail starts at the cabin. There is a short steep hill down than back up as the trail crosses a creek near its beginning. The trail then descends gradually to Cedar Ramble.

u Hydro Hill & Hydro Way - 1.1 km

The hydroelectric power line is wide open with some good viewpoints and serves as a hub to access other trails. Hydro Hill is a fast downhill with a sharp corner at the bottom with leads to a couple of short hills before a very fast descent with a sharp corner at the bottom.

l Novice Glide - 1.2 km

Novice Glide skis well in both directions either gradually up to the hydro line or gradually down. At the bottom you can make a sharp corner to head back up to Cedar Ramble or head straight down to BCIT and back to the parking lot.

n Cedar Ramble - 1.3 km

Cedar Ramble starts at the bottom of the Hydro Hill. The first half is mostly downhill and relatively easy while the second half descends more quickly with a sharp corner just as it meets the Novice Glide. The trail also skis well uphill.

l Beaver Lake Road - 0.5 km

This is a beautiful trail. It is densely wooded trail starts at the bottom of Hydro Way and winds its way slowly downhill past Beaver Lake on out to the BCIT Trail. Hear you can either head uphill towards the cabin or the hydro lines or make your way back to the parking area. It skis best downhill.

l BCIT - 1.8 km

The first part of the trail, going up towards the parking area, has some tricky downhill sections but they are over quickly and they lead to an easy ski in a thickly wooded area. When you can see the highway you are almost back to the parking area.

l Easy Al’s

This trail starts near the beginning of the BCIT Trail. It goes through an open meadow and finishes with a down to the Beaver Lake Road.

l Broadway Ramble - 0.8 km

This trail follows the Highway 23 right of way and leads directly to the parking lot. Many skiers will start on this trail, join BCIT until it starts climbing and then return to the parking area the same way for an easy 4.5 km ski.

u Short Hop - 0.1 km

This is a steep short pitch connecting BCIT with the Beaver Lake Road.

l Mickey Olson Trail - 3.7 km

Newly built in 2001, it is considered to be our longest and easiest section of trail and especially good for skating.

Ole Sandberg Hut

The Ole Sandberg hut is 2.5 kilometres from the parking area, at the junction of Main Loop, Log Roller and Creek Crawl. It’s situated so that several different loops can be skied from its location. The hut is heated with a wood stove and has a huge covered porch. An outhouse is located close by. First aid supplies and equipment (toboggan) are stored at the cabin as well. The hut is not intended for overnight use.

Other Areas at Revelstoke

l Golf Course - 4.0 km

Proceed west from the Trans-Canada Highway stop lights and proceed along Laforme Boulevard. Signs will direct you to the Golf Course. This flat figure 8 loop is suited for classic skiing only. Trails here are set by the Revelstoke Golf Club and there is a fee.

l Mount Revelstoke - 6.5 km

Parks Canada intermittently packs a portion of the Meadows in the Sky Parkway in Mount Revelstoke National Park. The trail rises gently but continuously to the Monashee Picnic Shelter. The trail is usually groomed with a snowmobile and track setter for classic skiing only. Contact Parks Canada at 837-7500 to determine when the trail was last groomed.

l Columbia River Flats

The Revelstoke Columbia River flats are also a popular spot for cross country skiers. There are no set trails and no grooming but on good days usually in late February and early March when the snow is firm, the skiing is great. You can access the flats from many places but most people park near the Equestrian Grounds and start by following the Illecillewaet River to the flats.
